FEATURE FILMS FROM THE FESTIVAL TO WATCH ONLINE:

ALMA | Patrick Rouxel 2011 France | 65 mins

Beautifully shot, alternately joyful and horrifying, Alma captures the ecological, and even spiritual, cost of meat, dairy, and leather production in the Brazilian Amazon. Rouxel (Green, SFGFF 2011) creates a powerful statement about the global industrial economy and the speed with which virgin forests are being cleared for timber and new grazing land. BACK TO THE GARDEN: FLOWER POWER COMES FULL CIRCLE | Kevin Tomlinson 2009 USA | 70 mins

In 1988, filmmaker Kevin Tomlinson filmed & interviewed a group of back-to-the-land ”hippies”—living off-grid, insulated from mainstream culture. In 2006 he tracked down his subjects again to find out what had become of their families’ utopian plans and dreams. The film captures a time-lapse view of these back-to-the-landers told with moving personal stories of dedicated tribal families— lots of freedom but little cash, unflinching grass-roots activism and hippie kids who today ask whether free love was really free. ON COAL RIVER | Francine Cavanaugh and Adams Wood 2011 USA | 81 mins

Described by Variety as a story of “Hillbilly Davids” besting a “corporate Goliath”, On Coal River does an extraordinary job of capturing the struggles of ordinary people fighting to save what remains of an Appalachian valley that they and their families have called home for generations. In the process, it beautifully captures the true human and environmental costs of “cheap”, dirty energy. Click here to watch.

GREEN | Patrick Rouxel 2010 France | 48 mins

Her name is Green, she is alone in a world that doesn’t belong to her. She is a female orang-utan, victim of deforestation and resource exploitation. Patrick Rouxel’s multi-award-winning documentary is a stunning visual ride through the life of an orangutan in the era of deforestation. Click here to watch.

HOME | Yann Arthus Bertrand 2009 France | 118 mins

Through visually stunning footage from over fifty countries, all shot from an aerial perspective, Yann Arthus-Bertrand shows us a view most of us have never seen.
