This informative and humorous documentary film follows nutritionist Shira Potash and her documentary filmmaker husband Yoav as they attempt to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet on a food stamp budget. Shira teaches healthy cooking classes to elementary students in low-income neighborhoods, most of whom are eligible for food stamps. In an attempt to to walk a mile in their shoes, Shira and Yoav embark on the “Food Stamp Challenge”, eating on roughly one dollar per meal. Through their adventures they consult with members of U.S. Congress, food justice organizations, nutrition experts, and people living on food stamps to take a deep look at America’s broken food system. www.foodstamped.com

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

Shira Potash is a certified nutrition educator with a Masters of Science in Community Health Education. She is currently a project manager for Kaiser Permanente’s national employee wellness program, Healthy Workforce, where she produced a series of cooking videos for employees. She has also produced videos for other non-profit nutrition education programs such as Cooking with Kids and Project EAT. In her private nutrition practice, Sprouts Nutrition, Shira works one-on-one with clients of all ages to guide them towards optimum health.This is her first film.
Yoav Potash’s work addresses important social issues of our day. Yoav recently produced and directed CRIME AFTER CRIME, a documentary about the legal battle to free a victim of abuse from a California prison. CRIME AFTER CRIME premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and has won a dozen major film festival awards, including the Audience Award and the Golden Gate Award for Investigative Documentary Feature at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Justice Matters Prize at the Washington DC International Film Festival, and the Grand Prize at the San Antonio Film Festival. For his advocacy, Yoav was the first filmmaker to be honored by the California Women’s Law Center with their Pursuit of Justice Award.Yoav has also produced short documentaries and videos for many companies and nonprofits, including Apple Computer, Neutrogena and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation to name a few. He has taught film courses at the Bay Area Video Coalition and Academy of Art University, and is a graduate of UC Berkeley, where he received the university’s top prize in creative writing.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Julian Mocine-McQueen is the Campaign and Partnerships Manager for Green For All, a national organization working to build an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty. Julian works with people around the country who are putting government investment dollars to work on a local level to build the green economy. As the facilitator of the Green For All Academy, he trains leaders with the tools they need to communicate the promise of the green economy and to engage disadvantaged communities in support of green jobs and climate protection strategies. Julian has been featured in The Nation, Wiretap magazine and The San Francisco Xpress, and has been recognized by the California Labor Archives for excellence in writing. Julian is an Oakland native and a graduate of San Francisco State University.

SFGFF Pops the Question 2.0 ~ Trivia Night Fundraiser @ Buck Tavern6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Back by popular demand, SFGFF returns with our second round of trivia, music, munchies and a pint. Start the midsummer madness at 6:30pm on Thursday, June 28 (game starts at 7:00pm sharp) at the Buck Tavern. Bring your friends, your thinking caps and a little cash and enjoy a night of drinks, food and some good green competition. Our partners at the Bay Area Science Festival and the Conservatory of Flowers, as well as NY Times crossword puzzle constructor Andrea Carla Michaels, have joined us to create some brain-twisting rounds.
We’ll have great prizes including tickets to the Plantosaurus Rex exhibit at the Conservatory of Flowers and tickets for upcoming SFGFF events, to name a few.

There’s another opportunity to view Festival 2011 Opening Night film BAG IT at the San Francisco Public Library on Thursday, August 23. This film will change your life!Americans use 60,000 plastic bags every five minutes, disposable bags that they throw away without much thought. But where is “away”? Where do the bags and other plastics end up, and at what cost to the environment, marine life, and human health? BAG IT follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. What he learns quickly grows far beyond plastic bags…
Also, check out “The Plastic in Question” exhibit on the 1st, 4th and 5th Floors of the San Francisco Main Library. Since 1999 Judith Selby Lang and Richard Lang have collected more than two tons of plastic trash from 1,000 yards of Kehoe Beach along the Point Reyes National Seashore. They have transformed this debris into engaging works of art that raise awareness of the sheer variety and ubiquity of plastic pollution and its impact on delicate marine ecosystems.

“Because pelicans have an ancient magic about them, and because their near-extinction and recovery parallel our human relationship to the environment, I’ve been wanting to make a film about them for years, but I needed a good story! One August afternoon, a confused young pelican landed on the roadway of the Golden Gate Bridge, causing a spectacular traffic jam and providing the beginning of a perfect narrative arc for this film.”

Jon Shenk’s The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced—the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable. The film follows Nasheed during his first year in office, culminating with a stirring speech given at the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009. Just this February, Nasheed was forced out of office in a coup d’etat, lending this film an unusual timeliness and poignancy.

Bad school food meets its match! Join the SF Green Film Festival, MLK Jr. Middle School, and the Edible Schoolyard Berkeley for a special screening of the award-winning documentary “Cafeteria Man” with chef Tony Geraci.- Learn first-hand from star Tony Geraci about the success of “Cafeteria Man” and what’s possible. Tony was recently named as one of the top 20 most influential food service directors in America, and is now running the Memphis school food program, serving 100,000 students.
- Get inspired to improve the school food program in your school or district.
- Tour the place where the healthier school food movement began in the 1990′s with the Edible Schoolyard, a one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom established by chef and activist Alice Waters through the Chez Panisse Foundation.

“Cafeteria Man” is a story of positive movement that shows what's possible in our nation’s schools. It’s about the aspiration of activists and citizens coming together to change the way kids eat at school. It’s about overhauling a dysfunctional nutritional system. And, it’s the story of what it takes, and who it takes, to make solutions happen.
Leading the charge to replace pre-plated, processed foods with locally-grown, freshly-prepared meals is Tony Geraci, food-service director for the city’s public schools in Baltimore, Maryland. A charismatic chef from New Orleans, Geraci’s bold vision includes school vegetable gardens, student-designed meals, meatless Mondays, and nutrition education in the classroom. Featuring Michael Pollan, First Lady Michelle Obama, and White House Chef Sam Kass. The film is directed by Emmy award-winner Richard Chisolm. The film is 65 minutes and suitable for middle school students and above.The star of the film, Tony Geraci, will be present for a discussion after the screening. The screening and discussion will be followed by tours of the Edible Schoolyard garden and kitchen, which is attached to the MLK Jr. Middle School – plus a food demo with Chef Tony!

Beautifully shot, alternately joyful and horrifying, Alma captures the ecological, and even spiritual, cost of meat, dairy, and leather production in the Amazon.
Since 2003, Patrick Rouxel has dedicated his time to making films aimed at raising awareness of deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and the ethical treatment of animals. The multi-award winning Green (which premiered at SFGFF 2011) presented a heartrending account of the life of an Orangutan against a backdrop of palm oil production and natural habitat loss.
In Alma, Rouxel continues his cinematic journey into the world’s forests and the industries that are destroying them, this time heading to Brazil to explore the devastating impacts of the cattle industry. Here he creates a powerful statement about the global industrial economy and the speed with which virgin forests are being cleared for timber and new grazing land.
The film offers a unique and visually stunning exposition of a colorful cowboy culture and the millions of animals used to satisfy our voracious global appetite for meat and dairy products. In almost-wordless contemplation, the film wanders from forest to pasture to rodeo to slaughterhouse to market to tannery. In essence, Alma is a journey into the soul of humanity and a testimony of the damage inflicted by humans on the natural world.
This event is co-presented with the Stegner Environmental Center and Green Stacks Program of the San Francisco Public Library.
